Examples of how indoctrination, belief, cognitive dissonance, and confirmation bias work with cult members

confirmation bias and cognitive dissonance have been discussed here and elsewhere quite a lot (if you're unfamiliar, google them).

we all use confirmation bias to some extent to reaffirm ourselves and our beliefs, and cognitive dissonance is something we all have to deal with, but cult members who have been indoctrinated with thought-reform (aka mind control) techniques display these in predictable ways when you know what you're looking for.. below are two scenarios and a cult member's interpretation of the events.

notice the belief that the cult is "the truth" is always reinforced by the member's interpretation of events, even when those events seem to be totally opposite.. scenario one.

Found Sheep

cult member depressed in cult - leaves and is happy

they are not "truly" happy they are now under Satan's controll

cult member happy - leaves is depressed (because they lost there friends and family)

no one can be happy with out the org

sorry! just had a moment I think from being dissed yesterday from a JW that I thought was my friend. Rejection sometimes makes me want a kid but I know that is not a good reason to have children. Not telling my hubby would be stupid he would suport me if that is what I wanted. Just a momentary weakness I had. A good night of sleep cleared my head. Shunning is there problem not mine
